Alfred Andre'lous Lockett, a 48-year-old African American man from Austin, Texas, tragically lost his life on September 12, 2017. Lockett, affectionately known as "Andre" or "Dre" to his family and friends, was employed by the Information Technology Services Department at the University of Texas. He was born on November 27, 1968, in Abilene, Texas, and was a graduate of Cooper High School and Prairie View A&M University.
Lockett's death occurred in a CVS parking lot in Northeast Austin
following an apparent road rage incident. According to police reports, Lockett's car had collided with another vehicle driven by 18-year-old Juan de Dios Carbajal-Jaimes. After the collision, Lockett followed Carbajal-Jaimes into the CVS parking lot, where Carbajal-Jaimes exited his vehicle and shot Lockett before fleeing the scene. Lockett managed to take a picture of Carbajal-Jaimes' license plate and a photo of him pointing his finger before he was fatally shot.
The investigation into Lockett's death revealed that Carbajal-Jaimes had fled to Mexico after the shooting. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was later found and extradited to the United States in January 2023. In May 2024, Carbajal-Jaimes was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The sentencing took into account a finding of "sudden passion," which reduced the potential sentence.
Lockett's family and the University of Texas community honored his memory with a special flag-raising ceremony and a tree planting on campus. His mother, Marjorie Hutchinson, has focused on healing and finding strength through her faith, despite the pain of losing her only son.
