In the summer of 2012, a promise-filled life was tragically cut short. On the evening of Thursday, July 26th, 16-year-old Kiera D. Tanter was with a group of friends in Gravois Park, located at the intersection of Miami and Louisiana Avenues in St. Louis, Missouri. The gathering was abruptly shattered at 9:15 p.m. when an unknown individual or individuals fired numerous shots into the crowd.
The sudden eruption of violence left chaos and devastation in its wake. In the aftermath, it was discovered that five people had been struck by the gunfire. Kiera was among those wounded and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the gunshot wounds she sustained proved to be fatal, and she died from her injuries. Another young woman, 20-year-old Ronisha Jackson, also succumbed to her injuries from the same incident.
The shooting appeared to have followed an argument between different groups in the park. In the days and weeks that followed, family and friends mourned the profound loss of the vibrant teenager. Described as having a goofy and lovable personality, Kiera was a free spirit whose smile could light up a room. She had attended Fanning Middle School and McCluer South Berkeley High School. As of now, the person or persons responsible for the deaths of Kiera Tanter and Ronisha Jackson have not been publicly identified, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting.
