Silvano Cortez, a 55-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on October 19, 2017, in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred during a home invasion at his residence in the Greenspoint area. Cortez and his wife were asleep when two men broke into their home, demanding money. A tenant living in a small apartment in the backyard of Cortez's home heard the commotion and came out to help, armed with a pistol.
A struggle ensued, and one of the intruders, Jonathan Vera, instructed his accomplice to shoot Cortez. The accomplice complied, resulting in Cortez's fatal shooting. Vera and the other man fled the scene, but the tenant fired his pistol at them as they ran, striking Vera in the right cheek. Approximately 45 minutes later, Vera was dropped off at an emergency room due to the gunshot wound to his face. He was later arrested and charged with capital murder after leaving the hospital and fleeing.
Jonathan Vera, who was 21 years old at the time of his sentencing, pleaded guilty to one charge of murder for his role in the fatal shooting of Silvano Cortez. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Due to his age at the time of the crime, Vera was not eligible for the death penalty or life without parole. The shooter in Cortez's death and possibly a third person who may have been driving the getaway car have yet to be identified. Vera was also accused of hitting and killing a 23-year-old Texas Southern University student in a rollover crash while out on bond for the murder charge. He was initially charged with manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid, but prosecutors later filed a motion to dismiss the charges, and a judge granted the motion.
Silvano Cortez was remembered as a hardworking family man who had children and grandchildren. His death left a significant impact on his family, who described him as a loving and faithful individual. The case highlights the tragic consequences of violent home invasions and the lasting effects on the victims' families. The investigation into the identities of the other suspects involved in the home invasion and shooting of Silvano Cortez remains ongoing.
