Matthew Lamar Virges, a 32-year-old Black man, was killed on Monday night, November 13, 2017, in the small Talladega County community of Alpine, Alabama, where he lived on Sunrise Circle. The first public confirmations came quickly: the county coroner identified him as the victim of a shooting at that address, placing the violence at his own home and turning a familiar neighborhood into a sudden crime scene.
