Dalton James Prater, an 18-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, tragically lost his life on June 12, 2018, in Mesquite, Texas. He was born on June 24, 1999, in Waco, Texas, and was a recent graduate of Rockwall/Heath High School. Dalton was known for his athletic abilities, particularly in high school football, and was a dedicated fan of the Texas Rangers.
On the afternoon of his death, Dalton was sitting in the driver's seat of his red Dodge pickup truck when he was shot multiple
times. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. near Gus Thomasson Road and Whitson Way. Dalton was pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim, 19-year-old Jacob Bradley Hollett, was taken to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting was believed to be the result of a drug deal gone wrong. Investigators determined that the suspects, Cassius Shakembe Williams and Rozman Rah-saan Shannon Jr., had intended to buy marijuana from the victims. During the transaction, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and demanded the drugs. When Jacob Hollett attempted to drive away, he was shot multiple times. Dalton, who was nearby in his pickup truck, was also shot several times by the suspect.
Both suspects, Williams and Shannon, were arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder. Williams, the son of former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Erik Williams, and Shannon faced significant legal consequences for their actions. The case drew considerable attention due to the involvement of a former NFL player's son and the tragic loss of two young lives.
The community and Dalton's family were deeply affected by his death. A GoFundMe campaign was created to help cover Dalton's funeral costs and other expenses, raising $3,100 in just 14 hours. The Mesquite Police Department and Crime Stoppers offered rewards for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible.
Dalton's death left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and the community, who remembered him for his loving nature and bright smile. His mother, Pam Prater, often shared heartfelt tributes online, expressing the profound loss and love she felt for her son.
