On December 3, 2021, Richard Lee Houston II, a 46-year-old Caucasian male and a 21-year veteran of the Mesquite Police Department, was fatally shot while responding to a disturbance call in the 1500 block of South Beltline Road in Mesquite, Texas. Officer Houston was shot multiple times by Jamie Jaramillo, who was involved in a confrontation with his wife and another woman. Officer Houston was transported to Baylor Hospital but was pronounced deceased at 2:11 p.m.

The incident occurred outside the Albertson's grocery store, where Officer Houston was attempting to mediate the situation. In body camera footage shown during the trial, Jaramillo is seen pulling out a gun and shooting Houston before turning the gun on himself. The prosecutor argued that Jaramillo knew Houston was a police officer, while the defense claimed Jaramillo did not realize who he was shooting due to issues with his eyesight.

Jaramillo was charged with capital murder and stood trial for the killing of Officer Houston. During the trial, Jaramillo's daughter testified that she and her mother confronted Jaramillo at the grocery store because they suspected him of having an affair. The jury found Jaramillo guilty of capital murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Officer Houston was highly respected in the community and had received numerous commendations throughout his career, including 48 letters of commendation, two life-saving awards, and a Certificate of Merit for his heroic actions in April 2021. He was survived by his wife, Shelley, and their three children, Shelby, Hannah, and Lucas.

The tragic death of Officer Richard Houston deeply affected the Mesquite community and highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. His legacy continues to be honored by his colleagues and the community he served.
