On July 4, 2018, Devonte Ortiz, a 19-year-old African-American male from Austin, Texas, was fatally shot during a dispute over fireworks. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning at the Pleasant Hills Apartments in southeast Austin. Ortiz and his friends were setting off fireworks when Jason Roche, a 41-year-old man, approached them and asked them to stop. After a heated argument, Roche shot Ortiz, claiming it was in self-defense.
