In the early hours of October 14, 2023, at approximately 2:20 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1700 block of Burton Drive in southeast Austin. Upon arrival, they discovered 50-year-old Feliciano Alvarado-Lajuj lying in the parking lot with gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 3:30 a.m.
APD's Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Specialists processed the scene and initiated an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that Alvarado-Lajuj was shot in the parking lot by an unknown suspect who fled the area immediately after the incident. As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made, and the suspect remains unidentified. This case marked Austin's 53rd homicide of 2023.
In the days following the incident, APD appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting to contact their Homicide Unit or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. A reward of up to $1,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest.
The area around East Riverside Drive, including Burton Drive, experienced a series of violent incidents around that time. APD reported investigating multiple homicides in the vicinity within the same week, raising concerns about a potential surge in violent crime in that part of the city.
