Deandre Patrick Thomas, a 41-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 18, 2018, in Killeen, Texas. The incident occurred in the parking lot of the OBok Restaurant & Club, where an argument between Thomas and another individual escalated into violence. According to reports, the altercation took place around 2 a.m., and police were called to the scene shortly thereafter. Upon arrival, officers found Thomas lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition but was pronounced dead at 2:46 a.m.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as 45-year-old Reginald Ferlandus Jackson, also an African American male. Witnesses at the scene reported that Jackson and Thomas had been involved in a verbal dispute earlier in the evening, which continued outside the club. Security camera footage corroborated these accounts, showing Jackson drawing a handgun from his waist and firing multiple shots at Thomas. Jackson was apprehended by police approximately fifteen minutes after the initial call, in the vicinity of Cantabrian Loop, based on descriptions provided by witnesses. A .45 caliber handgun was recovered along the route from the club to where Jackson was detained.
Following his arrest, Jackson was charged with the murder of Deandre Patrick Thomas. He was held in the Bell County jail with a bond set at $500,000. The case proceeded to trial, with jury selection beginning in January 2020. The prosecution presented evidence including witness testimonies and security camera footage, which clearly depicted the confrontation and subsequent shooting. The defense argued that the incident was a result of self-defense, but the evidence presented by the prosecution painted a different picture.
In October 2018, a Bell County grand jury returned a murder indictment against Jackson.
