On May 13, 2019, Jose Villarreal, a 37-year-old Hispanic man from Kingsville, Texas, was tragically killed in a double homicide at an apartment complex near Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when multiple gunshots were reported at the Utopian Apartments in the 1700 block of North First Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Jose Villarreal at the bottom of the stairs with multiple gunshot wounds, and another man, his brother Adan Villarreal,
41, in an apartment with several gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a local hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The Kingsville Police Department, along with the Texas Rangers, launched an investigation into the shooting. Within days, they arrested two suspects: 30-year-old David Isassi Jr. of Kingsville and 17-year-old Iziah Lamar Lopez of Falfurrias. Both were charged with two counts of capital murder. Isassi was arrested in Kingsville, while Lopez was apprehended in Falfurrias with assistance from the Brooks County Sheriff's Department.
