Senior Patrolman Sherman Otto Benys Jr., aged 58, tragically lost his life on November 4, 2021, after sustaining gunshot wounds while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Kingsville, Texas. Benys, a dedicated officer with the Kingsville Police Department, was shot on November 1, 2021, in the 300 block of South Wanda Drive. He was rushed to Christus Spohn Hospital-Shoreline in Corpus Christi, where he fought for his life for nearly three days before succumbing to his injuries.
The
incident occurred when Benys and another officer arrived at the scene of a domestic dispute. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Alfredo Deleon, opened fire on the officers, striking Benys. Deleon was quickly apprehended and taken into custody. He was later charged with three counts of capital murder of a police officer or firefighter, attempted capital murder, aggravated assault, and deadly conduct. In December 2023, Deleon was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Benys, who was known for his dedication and selflessness, left behind a wife, Vicki, and three children: daughters Breanne and Bailey, and son Benjamin. His funeral was held on November 9, 2021, at St. Gertrude the Great Catholic Church in Kingsville, attended by family, friends, and fellow officers. Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of Benys' service and sacrifice.
The Benys family has since been vocal about their grief and the need for justice. Vicki Benys, in particular, has expressed relief at Deleon's life sentence, though she has not yet forgiven him. The family continues to honor Sherman's memory by supporting first responders and raising awareness about the dangers they face.
