Braxton "Trey" Mathis, a 21-year-old man from Plainview, Texas, was found dead in a ditch at County Road 67 and FM 2286 in Floyd County on May 16, 2019. The body was discovered around 11 a.m. and was later taken to South Plains Pathology for an autopsy. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mathis died from a gunshot wound, and the case was treated as a suspicious death.
The Texas Rangers, along with the Floyd County Sheriff's Office and Hale County Sheriff's Office, launched an
investigation into Mathis' death. His family was devastated by the news and sought justice, as Mathis was described as a kind, helpful, and loving individual who maintained good relationships with his family.
On May 21, 2019, three individuals were arrested in connection with Mathis' death. Mario Baquera, 24, was charged with manslaughter; Bryce Gonzalez, 20, faced charges of tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse; and Blayke Sistrunk, 17, was charged with tampering with evidence and retaliation. The arrests were made by the Texas Rangers, and the investigation continued to unfold.
The family of Braxton Mathis continues to seek closure and justice for his untimely death, hoping to find answers to the many unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of his passing.
