Francisco Javier Pasillas, a 33-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on August 22, 2019, in Garland, Texas, as a result of a road rage incident. Pasillas was traveling with his wife, Janet Martin, in their SUV when they encountered an aggressive driver weaving through traffic. The situation escalated when the driver pulled in front of them and abruptly hit the brakes. As tensions rose, the driver of the other vehicle pulled out a gun and shot Pasillas.
Despite his wife's efforts to get him to the hospital, Pasillas succumbed to his injuries.
The shooter, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, voluntarily turned himself in to the Garland Police Department hours after the incident. However, he was released without charges, as the police stated that further investigation was needed. The case was complicated by conflicting accounts, with the shooter claiming self-defense. Pasillas' family, including his wife and brother-in-law, Fernando Espinoza, have been vocal in their demand for justice, insisting that Pasillas did not pose a threat as he was unarmed.
Security footage and witness statements revealed that Pasillas had thrown a glass bottle at the shooter's vehicle before the shots were fired. The shooter, a 28-year-old African American male, claimed that he believed he was being shot at when he heard a loud 'pop' and saw his rear window shatter. Fearing for his life, he fired back at Pasillas. The Garland Police Department has forwarded the case to a grand jury to determine whether charges should be filed against the shooter.
Pasillas' family has been actively protesting outside the Garland Police Department, calling for a criminal indictment for murder. They argue that the shooter had other options, such as slowing down or calling the police, instead of resorting to lethal force. The case remains under investigation, with the grand jury's decision pending. Pasillas' death has left his family devastated, particularly his wife, who witnessed the entire incident and now has to explain to their children why their father is no longer with them.
