One of the bullets penetrated the bathroom wall, striking Perez and causing his death.

The investigation revealed that Jose Avalos, who was having an affair with Perez's wife, was responsible for the shooting. Avalos drove by the residence and fired multiple rounds from the alley. Police found numerous shell casings in the alley and backyard. Avalos initially claimed he was at a 7-Eleven at the time of the shooting, but GPS data and surveillance footage placed him near the scene. His shirt and steering wheel tested positive for gunshot residue.

Avalos was later arrested and indicted for murder. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of personal conflicts escalating to violence, leaving Perez's family and community to grieve his loss.
