On June 29, 2020, 17-year-old Moses Johnson was tragically killed in a shooting incident in San Antonio, Texas. Johnson, a young Black male, was walking with a 15-year-old friend near the 100 block of Aztec Alley when a 50-year-old man named Gilberto Perez allegedly opened fire on them from his vehicle. Johnson returned fire but was struck and later died at the hospital.
The other teenager was unharmed.
Gilberto Perez was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to the arrest affidavit, Perez claimed he was defending himself after being ambushed by the teenagers, but surveillance video and witness statements contradicted his account. Perez's bail was set at $240,000, and his trial was scheduled for November 27, 2023.
