A birthday party on a Saturday night in Madison, Tennessee, took a tragic turn, resulting in the death of 50-year-old Latonia Johnson. The incident, which occurred on July 4, 2020, stemmed from a physical altercation between Johnson and another woman, Darlene R. Knight, who was 48 at the time. The two women had been attending a birthday celebration at the Rothwood Apartments on Rothwood Avenue when a fistfight broke out between them.
Following the initial confrontation, Knight left the
party in a vehicle. However, she returned shortly after as Johnson was in the parking lot preparing to leave. Witnesses reported that Knight exited her car holding a pistol and aimed it at Johnson. In response, Johnson charged toward Knight. Knight then fired her weapon, striking Johnson. Johnson died from her injuries at the scene of the shooting, which occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m.
After the shooting, Knight fled the scene before police could arrive. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued, charging her with criminal homicide. Knight later surrendered to the authorities in the late afternoon. Upon her surrender, she declined to provide a statement to detectives. Darlene R. Knight was then formally charged with criminal homicide for the fatal shooting of Latonia Johnson.
