Tito Roman, a 39-year-old man from San Antonio, Texas, tragically lost his life on March 17, 2021. According to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, both Gibbens and Skaggs were indicted by a grand jury for the murder of Tito Roman. The indictment alleged that on March 17, Gibbens and Skaggs "intentionally and knowingly caused the death of Tito Roman by shooting Roman with a deadly weapon ". The suspects were arrested nearly two weeks after the incident, on March 30.
The case against Gibbens and Skaggs revealed that they had conspired to lure Roman to the motel room where the shooting took place. Video surveillance captured Gibbens meeting with Roman before the incident, and Skaggs was seen entering and leaving the motel room after the shooting. Both suspects were charged with felony murder, and if convicted, they faced a punishment ranging from five to 99 years, or life in prison, along with a possible fine of up to $10,000.
In May 2023, Douglas Skaggs was convicted of the murder of Tito Roman and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Hayley Gibbens took a plea deal and was expected to be sentenced soon after. The court proceedings highlighted the premeditated nature of the crime, with Skaggs admitting to shooting Roman during an ongoing dispute over stolen property.
