Marlon Duwayne Wright, a 39-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on July 30, 2020, in Arlington, Texas. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. when the Arlington Police Department responded to a shooting in the 600 block of Carter Drive. Upon arrival, officers found Marlon Duwayne Wright on a sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Marlon Wright had met with Tevin Rashad Wright, a 34-year-old African
American male, at a convenience store on South Watson Road in Arlington earlier that day. Despite sharing the same last name, the two men were not related. Surveillance footage showed them engaging in a lengthy conversation both inside and outside the store. After leaving the store, Tevin followed Marlon's vehicle, and they were seen talking again on Hollandale Circle. Shortly after, gunshots were heard, and witnesses reported seeing Marlon lying on the ground with Tevin standing over him holding a handgun. Tevin then fled the scene in a red Cadillac SUV.
In August 2020, Tevin Rashad Wright was arrested and charged with the murder of Marlon Duwayne Wright. During the trial, Tevin admitted to shooting Marlon but claimed it was in self-defense. However, the jury found him guilty of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Tevin was sentenced to 35 years in prison for murder and an additional 10 years for unlawful possession of a weapon, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Peter Gieseking and Ashton Moore, with Investigator Kevin Hilliard also working on the case. Tevin Rashad Wright had a history of previous arrests for various offenses, including aggravated robbery, assault causing bodily injury, burglary, criminal mischief, evading arrest, manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, theft of property, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Marlon Duwayne Wright's death was a tragic loss for his family and the community. He was remembered as an entrepreneur who had moved to Arlington in 2013 with his two sons. Marlon was known for his love of family, the outdoors, and helping others. He was survived by his three children, his parents, siblings, and a large extended family. His funeral services were held on August 8, 2020, in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was laid to rest.
