He was known for his deep faith and active participation in his local church communities, including Enon Baptist Church and Shady Grove Church in Jefferson, Texas. Terry was a graduate of Jefferson Central High School, class of 1979. He was survived by his daughter, Ashley Neal, and his granddaughter, Zaylah, both of Marshall, Texas, along with numerous siblings and extended family members.

The circumstances surrounding Terry's death were tragic and involved a violent altercation. On the day of his death, Terry was at the residence of his recently separated girlfriend, Charlene Keigi, in Marshall, Texas. According to reports, Charlene Keigi, a 61-year-old woman, called 911 at approximately 4 p.m. to report that Terry was on her property. The call was abruptly disconnected, but she called back shortly afterward, stating that she had shot Terry and would be waiting in the front yard for authorities to arrive.

When deputies from the Harrison County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they found Terry with gunshot wounds and immediately began rendering first aid until emergency medical services arrived. Despite their efforts, Terry was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Charlene Keigi was detained at the scene and subsequently arrested on charges of murder. She was booked into the Harrison County Jail with a bond set at $250,000.

The legal proceedings following Terry's death saw Charlene Keigi being tried for murder in the 71st District Court. In March 2023, she was found guilty of the murder of Terry L.
