On October 30, 2020, Jose Francisco Galeano Antunez, a 38-year-old man of Hispanic ethnicity, was fatally shot in North Austin, Texas. Antunez was outside his home when two suspects approached him and his friends in a maroon sedan, offering to sell them drugs. When Antunez declined, the suspects drove off but returned minutes later, attempting to rob the group.
During the altercation that followed, Antunez was shot and later pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts by medics.
The Austin Police Department launched an investigation into the incident, describing it as a random attack. They identified two suspects: one was a 6' tall, thin, black male wearing a wine-colored sweatshirt, and the other was a 5'7" tall, heavy-set black male with a light skin tone, wearing a white or light-colored short sleeve shirt. A $1,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest.
On November 9, 2020, Richard Speed, an 18-year-old, was arrested in connection with the murder and charged with capital murder. Speed was taken into custody in Round Rock by the Lonestar Fugitive Task Force with assistance from the Round Rock Police Department. His bond was set at $200,000. The second suspect, a juvenile, remained at large.
The Travis County Medical Examiner's office conducted an autopsy to determine the official cause of Antunez's death. The investigation continued as APD sought additional information and video footage from the public to aid in the case.
In August 2022, Speed pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The case highlighted the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring justice for victims and their families while continuing to search for the remaining suspect.
