Georgette Frances Garcia-Kaufmann, a 50-year-old Hispanic woman, was an assistant attorney general and a lifelong resident of El Paso, Texas. She died unexpectedly on November 14, 2020, at her home in the Manhattan Heights neighborhood. Georgette was born on May 21, 1970, and was the daughter of George E. Garcia and Gloria Garcia . She was survived by her husband, Daniel Kaufmann, and their 17-year-old son, Connor George Kaufmann.
On the evening of November 14, 2020, Georgette was
fatally shot by Joseph Angel Alvarez, a 38-year-old man with extremist religious beliefs. Alvarez believed that Memorial Park in El Paso was used for satanic rituals and abortions, and he targeted the Kaufmanns' home because he thought it was part of a satanic cult. Alvarez ambushed Georgette as she arrived home and shot her in the garage. He then attempted to enter the house and shot Daniel Kaufmann, who survived the attack.
Alvarez was arrested on November 9, 2021, and later found guilty of murder and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Georgette Kaufmann and received an additional 20 years for the assault on Daniel Kaufmann. During the trial, Alvarez's defense argued that he suffered from mental illness, but the prosecution successfully proved that he knew the difference between right and wrong.
The tragic death of Georgette Garcia-Kaufmann shook the El Paso community and highlighted the dangers of extremist beliefs. Her family and colleagues remembered her as a devoted wife, mother, and a deeply spiritual person who made a positive impact on those around her.
