Anthony Tyrone "Tony" Newton Jr., a 25-year-old male, tragically passed away on February 21, 2021, in Killeen, Texas. He was found suffering from a gunshot wound at the Crew Hookah Lounge on Watercrest Road around 2:13 a.m. Despite the efforts of officers who performed CPR until paramedics arrived, Newton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:03 a.m.
The investigation into Newton's death led to the arrest of 21-year-old Gregory Ellis, who was charged with tampering with
or fabricating evidence related to the shooting. Ellis was identified as the shooter three days after the incident and was placed in Killeen City Jail. However, the Killeen Police Department deemed the shooting non-criminal, and no further action was taken on the investigation.
The case drew significant attention, and the Bell County Grand Jury indicted Ellis on May 10, 2021, for tampering with or fabricating evidence. Despite the charges, the investigation into the shooting itself was closed. The community and Newton's loved ones continue to seek justice and closure for his untimely death.
