On March 8, 2021, Christopher Franklin Payne was arrested as a possible suspect for the murder. Payne was charged with first-degree murder and faced a bond of $1 million. According to the arrest affidavit, surveillance footage showed Payne approaching Fernandez inside the store and later outside, where the shooting occurred. Payne was seen quickly walking away from the scene after the gunshot was heard.
The investigation revealed that Payne and Fernandez had an argument about money, which led to the fatal shooting. Payne was later indicted on the murder charge and faced up to life in prison if convicted.
