Christopher Debase, a 36-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on April 10, 2021, in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m. in the parking lot of a corner store located at 2901 Walnut Bend Lane in west Houston. Debase was seated in the driver's seat of his gray Dodge Journey when he was approached by an unknown assailant.
The suspect, described as a Black male approximately 6 feet to 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing between 150 to 170 pounds, was wearing a black hoodie, mask, and gloves. The assailant fired multiple rounds into the vehicle, striking Debase several times before fleeing the scene. Debase was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Houston Police Department has been actively investigating the case and has identified Anthony Wright, a 29-year-old Black male, as a person of interest. Wright, who stands 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds, was seen in surveillance footage near the parking lot at the time of the shooting. Although Wright has not been charged in connection with Debase's death, investigators believe he may have crucial information about the incident. Wright is also wanted on three felony warrants unrelated to this case. The HPD has released surveillance photos of Wright and the suspect, urging anyone with information about their whereabouts to come forward.
Debase's family has been vocal in their plea for justice, holding press conferences and appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. During one such press conference, Debase's mother expressed her forgiveness towards the shooter but emphasized her desire for justice for her son. The family has been deeply affected by the loss, describing Debase as a beloved son, brother, father, husband, friend, cousin, and grandson. The HPD continues to seek tips and critical information to solve the case and bring closure to Debase's grieving family.
