Cameron T. Wilcox, a 30-year-old man from Cedar Park, Texas, tragically lost his life on July 7, 2021. The incident occurred in front of his home following a confrontation at a local grocery store. Wilcox was unarmed when he was shot multiple times by Hector De Jesus Villatoro-Guevara, who was 33 years old at the time. Villatoro-Guevara had encountered Wilcox and the mother of his children at the checkout line of the H-E-B grocery store, leading to a heated exchange.
After the confrontation at the store, Villatoro-Guevara followed Wilcox and his ex-girlfriend to their home. Witnesses reported that Villatoro-Guevara retrieved a handgun from his car, fired two shots into the air, and then shot Wilcox multiple times in broad daylight. Wilcox died at the scene, and Villatoro-Guevara was later arrested by Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers in Leander.
The case went to trial, and on September 15, 2023, a Williamson County jury found Villatoro-Guevara guilty of murder. The jury rejected his claim of self-defense and sentenced him to 45 years in prison. Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick stated that the case was a tragic example of how a disagreement can escalate into a deadly confrontation when a gun is involved. The district attorney expressed satisfaction that justice had been served for Wilcox and his family.
