Maria Rangel, a 38-year-old woman, was fatally shot in the early hours of March 1, 2025, in Port Charlotte, Florida. The incident occurred at the home of her grandfather, 67-year-old Jose Mogro, who had taken her in to help her get back on track. According to reports, Rangel had recently moved from Texas to stay with her grandparents. Her grandfather and grandmother stated that she suffered from bipolar disorder and had been exhibiting increasingly aggressive behavior. On the night of the incident, Rangel returned home around 2 a.m. after leaving earlier in the day. She was reportedly making loud noises and slamming doors, which disturbed her grandparents.
Mogro, feeling unsafe due to Rangel’s behavior, locked himself in his bedroom. However, about 20 minutes later, Rangel began banging on the bedroom door. Mogro armed himself with a gun before unlocking and opening the door. He later told authorities that Rangel was swinging her arms and approaching him quickly, prompting him to fire his weapon. The bullet struck Rangel in the chest, killing her. Despite the fatal outcome, authorities determined that Rangel did not pose a real threat to Mogro at the time of the shooting.
Following the incident, Mogro was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Legal experts noted that the charge was chosen over manslaughter because Mogro did not necessarily intend to kill his granddaughter, but rather used the gun as a tool to deter her. He was later released on bond and is expected to appear in court in April. The case has raised discussions about self-defense laws and the appropriate charges in situations where a family member is involved in a fatal shooting.
