On August 13, 2021, Jose Villarreal Jr., a 39-year-old man from Brownsville, Texas, was tragically killed. Villarreal, who was Hispanic, was lured to a location by two women he met on social media. Once there, he was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to withdraw money from his bank account at various ATM locations around the city. After the suspects took the money, Villarreal was shot and killed.
His body was later discovered on Father Mestas Street.
The investigation led to the arrest of three suspects: Jose Luis Vasquez Jr., Britny Nicole Perez, and Sandra Yadira Reyna. Vasquez and Perez were arrested in August 2021, while Reyna was arrested in September 2021. All three were charged with murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, and aggravated kidnapping. Vasquez and Reyna had previous convictions, with Vasquez having been convicted of aggravated robbery and Reyna of possession of marijuana.
In August 2022, a Cameron County jury found Jose Luis Vasquez Jr. guilty of murder and aggravated kidnapping. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder charge and 55 years for the aggravated kidnapping charge. Perez and Reyna had their charges dismissed after they cooperated with the district attorney's office and testified against Vasquez.
The loss of Jose Villarreal Jr.'s life was described as senseless and heinous by Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz. The case sent a strong message that such behavior would not be tolerated in Cameron County.
