Brooksie Worsham was an 81-year-old White woman from Pasadena, Texas, who was remembered by friends as a sweet and gracious person. Known to some as "Memaw," she had once worked as a babysitter for a local family and was described as the nicest person one could ever meet.
In the early morning hours of August 25, 2021, Worsham was shot and killed as she slept in her bed.
Her husband, who was sleeping beside her in their home in the Village Grove neighborhood, was also wounded in the attack. A neighbor had called 911 at approximately 2:43 a.m. to report hearing gunshots in the area, but responding officers found nothing suspicious at the time. About an hour later, at 3:46 a.m., Worsham’s husband called 911 to report that he had woken up to find his wife unresponsive. He had been shot in the leg but was expected to recover.
When detectives arrived at the home on Rainfall Drive, they discovered a broken master bedroom window at the back of the house. On the ground just outside the window, they found shell casings, indicating the shots had been fired from outside the residence. The investigation quickly gained momentum after police reviewed surveillance video that showed a vehicle entering the subdivision shortly before the shooting occurred.
Investigators determined that the vehicle’s registered owner was linked to another active investigation that involved Brooksie Worsham’s husband. This connection led them to identify 20-year-old Jack Monroe Beck as the suspected shooter. The day after the murder, on August 26, 2021, a team consisting of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force, U.S. Marshals, and Louisiana State Police located Beck just outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was taken into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, Jack Monroe Beck was extradited to Texas to face charges for the murder. He was subsequently tried, convicted, and sentenced for the crime.
