Maira Gutierrez, a 38-year-old woman from Pasadena, Texas, tragically lost her life on October 3, 2022. She was found shot to death inside her own SUV, which was discovered in an industrial construction site in southeast Houston. Gutierrez, a mother of four, had been visiting her child at the apartment of her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Chacon, when the incident occurred.
Daniel Chacon, who was 30 years old at the time, became the primary suspect in Gutierrez's murder.
Witnesses reported seeing Chacon forcing Gutierrez into her SUV at gunpoint. Chacon had a history of domestic violence, including previous convictions for assaulting his former common-law wife and violating a protective order. After the murder, Chacon fled to Mexico but was later arrested and extradited back to the United States.
In December 2024, Chacon was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court found that Chacon kidnapped Gutierrez at gunpoint and fatally shot her. The tragic case highlighted the severe consequences of domestic violence and the importance of protective measures for victims.
Gutierrez's family and friends held a memorial for her, including a balloon release to honor her memory. Despite her tragic death, her loved ones continue to seek justice and raise awareness about domestic violence.
