Johnny Vidal Hogan, a 47-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost his life on April 15, 2022, in Waco, Texas. Hogan was found dead in his home located in the 3100 block of Pipkin Lane, having succumbed to a gunshot wound. The investigation into his death quickly identified Evaristo Jacobo Garcia, a 36-year-old man, as the primary suspect.
Garcia was developed as a suspect early in the investigation, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
He was tracked to a residence in the 1300 block of Sleepy Lane in Tow, Texas, in Llano County. When deputies from the Llano County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Williamson County SWAT Team arrived, Garcia barricaded himself inside the residence. After a four-hour standoff, Garcia surrendered and was taken into custody. Two guns were recovered following his arrest.
Garcia was later transferred to the McLennan County Jail, where he remained under a $1 million bond until his court appearance. On March 25, 2024, Garcia pled guilty to the murder of Johnny Vidal Hogan and was sentenced to 35 years in prison. McLennan County Assistant District Attorney Will Hix praised the thorough work of the Waco PD detectives, whose investigation, including the capture of video evidence, was crucial in reaching a resolution without the need for a trial.
The case against Garcia highlighted the importance of diligent police work and the use of modern investigative techniques. The resolution brought some measure of closure to Hogan's family and friends, who continue to remember him fondly.
