Amonte Lamonte Watters, a 17-year-old male, was fatally shot on April 30, 2022, at a North Austin apartment complex located at 7610 Cameron Road. He succumbed to his injuries on May 5, 2022, at Dell Seton Medical Center. The Austin Police Department received a 911 call reporting the shooting shortly before 8:15 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Watters on the ground with obvious trauma to his body. Surveillance video and witness statements indicated that two groups of males were involved in a shooting at the back of the apartment complex. The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was ruled as homicide.
Following the incident, APD launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of two suspects: John Willie Davis III, 18, and Dmaurri Mehki Hubbard, 20. Both were charged with first-degree murder. Davis was also charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, while Hubbard faced an additional charge of evading on foot. Davis' bond was set at $500,000, and Hubbard's bond was still pending at the time of the arrests. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
The case is being investigated as Austin's 26th homicide of 2022. APD continues to seek information or video footage of the incident and urges anyone with relevant details to come forward. The arrests of Davis and Hubbard took place on June 22, 2022, in the 1700 block of Rockbridge Terrace. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspects are awaiting trial.
