In the early morning hours of June 9, 2016, while walking to his car after leaving a club in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Tyrell was shot and killed during an attempted robbery. The incident, which occurred around 1:20 a.m. at the intersection of Olive and Walton, sent shockwaves through the community, not only for its brutality but also for its heartbreaking parallel to the past. Six years prior, Tyrell's father, a former police officer, had also been murdered during a robbery. This devastating coincidence compounded the grief for his family, who had already channeled their pain from the elder Thompson's death into anti-violence advocacy.
The investigation into Tyrell's murder revealed that two suspects, described as being in their late teens or early twenties, fled the scene in a dark-colored, four-door sedan, believed to be a General Motors vehicle. One suspect was reportedly wearing a white t-shirt and white pants, while the other was dressed in dark clothing.
