In the summer of 2017, the life of 16-year-old Antonio Maurice Straughter was tragically cut short on a Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. On June 25th, while standing in an alley in the 5000 block of Thekla with two friends, a white car approached the group. A Black male suspect exited the driver's side of the vehicle and opened fire on the trio. The sudden burst of violence left Antonio fatally wounded. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His two companions were also struck by the gunfire but survived their injuries.
Antonio, who was looking forward to his 17th birthday in July, was a student at the Innovative Concept Academy. He was remembered by his family as a funny and loving young man who enjoyed playing basketball and spending time at church. He also had a passion for making a positive impact in his community, which was evident through his participation in the YES program at the Saint Louis Science Center, where he had shown a keen interest in creating a community garden. His death left his family, including his father who had been working on a car as a birthday gift for him, utterly devastated.
In the wake of the shooting, the St. Louis community mourned the loss of a promising young life. The Saint Louis Science Center expressed their heartbreak over his passing, highlighting the positive contributions he had made to their youth program. Law enforcement officials began an investigation into the homicide, and CrimeStoppers offered a reward of up to $5,000 for any information that would lead to an arrest in the case. Despite the initial investigation and the public appeal for information, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the murder of Antonio Straughter. The case remains an open homicide, leaving his family and community still waiting for justice.
