Brandon Lloyd, a 22-year-old male from Lubbock, Texas, was tragically killed in a shooting on August 7, 2022. The incident occurred in East Lubbock, specifically in the area of East 42nd Street and Avenue A. According to the Lubbock Police Department, officers were called to the scene for shots fired and found Lloyd with a gunshot wound. He was transported to University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Lloyd's cousin, who was with him at the time, reported that they were walking when two suspects drove up to them and made an unclear comment. The suspects circled back, and gunshots were fired, striking Lloyd. The suspects then fled the scene.
The investigation into Lloyd's death revealed that a 17-year-old suspect turned himself in to the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center without incident on August 12, 2022. The suspect, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 13 years. However, Lloyd's family, particularly his stepmother, Stacie Rutherford, felt that the charges were insufficient and that everyone involved should have been charged with murder. Rutherford expressed frustration with the investigation, stating that authorities did not arrest everyone involved and did not keep the family informed throughout the process.
The Lubbock Police Department continued to seek information on a second suspect and a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting. They offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. The investigation also revealed that Lloyd was shot with a small caliber bullet, contrary to initial reports that suggested an assault-style rifle was used. Rutherford questioned how the suspect obtained the gun and believed that whoever provided the weapon should also be charged.
Throughout the investigation, Lloyd's family felt that their tips and concerns were not taken seriously by the authorities. They reported hearing stories that Lloyd was set up, but felt that their reports were not adequately addressed. The family continued to seek justice for Brandon Lloyd and hoped for more charges to be brought against those involved in his death.
