The incident began as an argument between Williams and Frederick Leon Harvey, 60, which escalated when they went outside. Williams retrieved a shotgun from his van but did not point it at Harvey. About 30 minutes later, Harvey returned with handguns and began shooting at Williams, who returned fire before succumbing to his injuries at a local hospital.
