The prosecution revealed that Nixon-Clark and his accomplice, 23-year-old Anthony Bell-Johnson, had driven to the neighborhood, parked their car, and fired more than a dozen shots into the garage where children were playing. The bullets that killed Rayshard Scott and Jamarrien Monroe were not recovered during autopsies, but evidence suggested that Nixon-Clark fired one round before his gun jammed.

Jamarrien Monroe's mother, Tijuana West, addressed Nixon-Clark in the courtroom, expressing the shared pain and loss experienced by both families.
