In the small Tennessee community of Cotula, a tragic and violent encounter unfolded on Friday, May 5, 1911, ending the life of 26-year-old Deputy Sheriff J. Wily Warwick. On that fateful day, Deputy Warwick, a male officer with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office, was engaged in the performance of his duties alongside another deputy.
The two lawmen were attempting to arrest a man who was reportedly intoxicated and carrying a weapon.
As they moved to take him into custody, the situation escalated dramatically. The man suddenly opened fire, and a bullet struck Deputy Warwick in the head, killing him. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, the suspect was also shot and killed at the scene.
Due to the death of the sole suspect during the confrontation with law enforcement, there were no subsequent arrests, trials, or convictions in the death of Deputy Sheriff Warwick. The incident left the community to mourn the loss of a young officer killed in the line of duty, his life cut short in a sudden act of violence.
