On May 11, 2023, a mass shooting occurred in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including Jarrell Harmon, who was 26 years old. The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of West 61st Street and South Union Avenue. According to reports, two offenders exited a vehicle and began firing at individuals standing in the 600 block of West 61st Street.
Jarrell Harmon and Jabez Davis, 20, were among the five people shot in the incident. Both Harmon and Davis were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in traumatic arrest but were pronounced dead at the hospital. Harmon was fatally struck in the body, while Davis was struck in the shoulder.
In addition to the two fatalities, three other individuals were wounded in the shooting. These included a 17-year-old boy shot in the arm, a 21-year-old man shot in the arm, and a 26-year-old woman who was also shot in the arm. All three surviving victims were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries and were expected to make a full recovery.
The shooting occurred in a residential area where many local children were outside enjoying the weather, although none of the children were injured. Neighbors expressed frustration and concern over the safety of the community, particularly for the children, as the area has seen significant deterioration over the past few decades.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made, and the motives behind the shooting remain unknown. The investigation is ongoing by the Chicago police.
