In the quiet neighborhood of the 2500 block of Poplar Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, the evening of September 27, 2016, was shattered by a grim discovery. Inside his home, 30-year-old Luis A. Molina, a male resident, was found deceased. Officers responding to an ambulance call entered the residence to find a horrific scene. Molina, wearing only his boxer shorts, was covered in blood, having sustained numerous wounds from a sharp object. The evidence of a violent struggle was palpable, with bloodstains marking every room on the main level of the house, from the walls and floors to the furniture and countertops.
The investigation into Molina's death soon uncovered a story that began in the early hours of September 25, 2016. According to friends, Molina had been out and had picked up a woman. He had told a friend that he intended to bring her back to his house. This woman was later identified as Amber C. Cunningham. Her fingerprints were found in blood on various items throughout Molina's home, directly linking her to the scene.
More than a year later, in December 2017, the case saw a significant breakthrough with the arrest of Cunningham. During questioning, she initially denied knowing Molina or ever being inside his residence. However, when confronted with the evidence, her story changed. She admitted to being with Molina, stating that he had picked her up and they had agreed she would be paid for sex. She claimed that after they had intercourse at his house, Molina refused to pay her and would not let her leave. According to Cunningham, this led to a violent fight. She alleged that Molina produced a knife, which she then took from him and used to stab him approximately ten times before fleeing the house.
Following her confession and the evidence gathered by the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office charged Amber C. Cunningham with Murder in the Second Degree and Armed Criminal Action for her role in the death of Luis A. Molina.
