Christopher Aguilar, a 27-year-old Hispanic/Latino man, was killed in an early-morning shooting on April 13, 2026, on Milwaukee’s south side. The gunfire erupted at about 5:30 a.m. near South 7th Street and West Historic Mitchell Street, in the 700 block of West Mitchell Street. Aguilar was found on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred outside the offices of Voces de la Frontera, an immigrant-rights organization located along Historic Mitchell Street.
Surveillance footage from the area captured the chaotic moments surrounding the shooting. According to reporting based on footage from Voces de la Frontera and nearby businesses, people could be seen running around the corner before someone opened fire on Aguilar in front of the organization’s office. Gunfire struck the building as well, shattering a window and leaving bullet holes in the walls. No one was inside the office at the time. Investigators initially said they were trying to determine what led to the violence and had not publicly identified a suspect during the first hours of the investigation.
As detectives worked the case, Milwaukee police identified a vehicle they believed was connected to Aguilar’s killing. That same vehicle was later linked by police to a separate shots-fired incident on the city’s north side. At approximately 4:47 p.m., officers located the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The driver, later identified as Nicholas Maslowski, fled, beginning a police pursuit through Milwaukee. The chase continued until the vehicle crashed on South 35th Street near West National Avenue, involving other traffic and sending another person to a hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
Police said Maslowski got out of the crashed vehicle and fired toward pursuing officers. Eight Milwaukee police officers returned fire, striking him. Firearms were recovered at the scene, and no officers or other people were reported struck by the gunfire during the exchange. Maslowski was transported to a hospital but died from his injuries. Milwaukee police subsequently identified him as the suspect they had been seeking in connection with Aguilar’s homicide.
Because Maslowski died during the police confrontation only hours after Aguilar was killed, he was never arrested, formally prosecuted, brought to trial, or convicted in connection with Aguilar’s death. Available reporting does not indicate that another person has been arrested or charged with Aguilar’s killing, and authorities have not publicly established a motive or fully explained what happened immediately before the fatal shooting. The separate police shooting that ended with Maslowski’s death was turned over to the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, with the Wauwatosa Police Department serving as the lead investigating agency.
