In the summer of 1940, a violent confrontation in the hills of Marion County, Tennessee, led to the death of Investigator Samuel Leeper, a 50-year-old male agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. On July 31st, Leeper and his fellow agents were conducting a raid on an illegal liquor still, a common enterprise in the region during that era.
