On October 14, 2019, Mark Dewayne Jackson, a 48-year-old male, was fatally shot at a residence in the 6000 block of Shillington Lane in Berkeley, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. The incident occurred during a domestic dispute between Jackson and his son at their home. Reports indicate that the argument escalated, prompting Mark Jackson to leave the house. He was followed by his son, who brandished a firearm.
The altercation turned deadly when the son fired a shot into the air before turning the weapon on his father, striking him. After Mark Jackson fell to the ground, he was shot multiple times at point-blank range. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police identified the suspect as the victim's 28-year-old son, Markell Jackson. Witnesses at the scene provided descriptions that led to his swift apprehension. Following the shooting, Markell Jackson fled the scene but was taken into custody shortly thereafter. He was held without bond and initially charged by the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
The case proceeded through the legal system, concluding without a trial. On June 29, 2021, Markell Jackson reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. A St. Louis County judge subsequently sentenced him to a total of 23 years in prison for the death of his father.
