In the early morning hours of August 14, 1997, a call regarding a possible suicide in Covington, Tennessee, set in motion a tragic chain of events. Sergeant Charles Lanny Bridges, a 50-year-old male and a 25-year veteran of the Covington Police Department, was one of the officers who responded to the scene.
Upon their arrival at the residence at approximately 8:00 a.m., the officers approached the home. As they knocked on the door, shots were suddenly fired from a window. Sergeant Bridges was struck and fatally wounded. Another officer who responded to the call was also wounded in the gunfire. The unexpected violence extended beyond law enforcement, as a passerby and their dog were also shot and injured.
Following the initial shooting, the suspect barricaded himself inside the house, leading to a standoff with law enforcement that lasted for several hours. When officers were finally able to enter the home, they discovered the suspect had died by suicide. Because the lone suspect took his own life, no arrests were made in connection with the death of Sergeant Bridges.
