Deputy Sheriff Gerald Monroe "Bubba" Gibson, aged 53, was shot and killed on July 13, 2000, during a 13-hour standoff with a burglary suspect in Petersburg, Tennessee. Gibson, a dedicated officer with the Hawkins County Sheriff's Office, was preparing to fire a tear gas canister when the suspect opened fire with a .30-30 rifle, striking him in the head.
