In the summer of 2005, Kristopher Carlyle, a 28-year-old male, was filled with the hope and promise of a burgeoning music career. An aspiring country singer from Kingston, North Carolina, he had moved to Nashville just two months prior to chase his dream. In early July, his mother, sister, and her boyfriend came to visit, a trip to celebrate his new life and to see the sights of Music City.
Their visit, however, would end in a tragedy that would cut short a young life and leave a family shattered.
On the evening of July 6, 2005, what was meant to be a memorable last night together took a dark and unforeseen turn. After enjoying dinner, the family set out to explore downtown Nashville. They took a wrong turn and found themselves lost. At approximately 10:30 p.m., their car was blocked by a group of four young men. Seeking help, Kris asked for directions. One of the youths suggested they pull into a nearby parking lot to talk.
Once in the parking lot, the friendly pretense vanished. One of the individuals, a 15-year-old named Twain Demario Vaughn, produced a pistol and demanded money. Kris handed over the $10 he had, but Vaughn insisted it was not enough. As Kris's mother, who was driving, attempted to speed away from the terrifying encounter, Vaughn fired a single shot into the car. The bullet struck Kris in the neck. He was rushed to Centennial Medical Center, but it was too late; he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed led to the arrest of Twain Demario Vaughn. Due to the severity of the crime, the 15-year-old was tried as an adult. In December 2005, a jury found Vaughn guilty of first-degree felony murder and aggravated robbery. Following the verdict, he was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the senseless death of Kristopher Carlyle.
