In the early morning hours of April 27, 2006, the life of 23-year-old Edwin Joe Todd Jr. was tragically cut short in a parking lot in Knoxville, Tennessee. A college student who had moved to the South from Chicago, he was known to his family as 'JR' and to his friends as 'Shaq' because of his love for basketball. Those who knew him described him as a caring older brother and a comical prankster with a passion for music, particularly drumming.
On the night of his death, Todd was at a club
called the Red Iguana in the Old City. An altercation that began inside the club, possibly involving Todd and his friends, led to them being asked to leave. The conflict didn't end there, spilling out into a nearby parking lot where a large brawl erupted. In the chaos of the fight, a single gunshot rang out, and everyone scattered. When police arrived at the scene around 3 a.m., they found Todd lying in the parking lot, having been shot.
The investigation into the shooting was hampered from the start by a lack of evidence and reluctant witnesses. Police were left with little more than a shirt and a shell casing from the crime scene. Despite interviewing more than 20 people who were present during the fight, investigators were unable to get a clear identification of the shooter. It was unclear whether witnesses were unable or unwilling to provide information.
Over the years, the case has grown cold, but not forgotten, especially by his family. His mother, Gina Todd, believes her son was trying to protect a friend when he was killed. She has been in regular contact with the Knoxville Police Department, reminding them of her son's unsolved murder. Investigators have received some leads, including a description of a possible suspect as a Black male with dreadlocks who may have relocated to the Atlanta, Georgia area after the incident. They were also told that a white, mid-90s Cadillac de Ville in very good condition was seen leaving the scene and could be connected to the suspect.
Despite these leads, no arrests have ever been made in the death of Edwin Joe Todd Jr. The person who pulled the trigger that night remains unidentified, and the case continues to be an open investigation for the Knoxville Police Department, a painful and unresolved chapter for a family still seeking justice for their son.
