On a summer day in Lebanon, Tennessee, the discovery of a woman's body in a trash can at a truck stop on June 6, 2007, marked the beginning of a chilling investigation into the actions of a long-haul trucker. The victim was identified as 48-year-old Symantha Winters O'Neal. An investigation revealed that she had been shot.
The case took a significant turn with the arrest of Bruce Mendenhall, an Illinois-based truck driver, on July 12, 2007, in Nashville, Tennessee. His arrest was the result of a detective noticing his truck, which matched the description of a vehicle seen on surveillance footage from another murder investigation. A search of Mendenhall's truck uncovered a significant amount of evidence, including the blood of multiple women, linking him to a string of violent crimes.
During questioning, Mendenhall implicated himself in the death of Symantha Winters O'Neal. Investigators learned that his victims were often women he encountered at truck stops. Subsequently, a Wilson County grand jury indicted Mendenhall for O'Neal's murder on August 17, 2007.
In 2018, Bruce Mendenhall was convicted of the first-degree murder of Symantha Winters O'Neal and received a life sentence. This was one of several murder convictions for the man who came to be known as the 'Truck Stop Killer.' He was also found guilty of the murders of Sara Hulbert in Tennessee and Carma Purpura in Indiana, receiving additional life sentences for his crimes. Mendenhall remains a suspect in several other homicides across the country.
