In November 2011, Siler, then 18, accepted a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder. This plea was entered to avoid a potential life sentence that could have come with a first-degree murder conviction. Siler's defense attorney had considered arguing that his client's actions were impulsive and possibly influenced by fetal alcohol syndrome, but ultimately advised Siler to take the plea deal. The judge sentenced Jamar Siler to 30 years in prison for the death of Ryan Anthony McDonald.
