In the autumn of 2014, the life of 33-year-old Michael Henry Brown of Lenoir City, Tennessee, came to a sudden and violent end. On the evening of October 22, events unfolded that would leave one man dead and another claiming self-defense in a situation stemming from an illicit drug transaction. The male victim, whose passion was skydiving, was a father to four children.
Earlier that evening, Brown and another man were reportedly involved in a drug deal with Taylor Richard Waldrop Johnson. When Johnson decided to back out of the transaction, an altercation ensued. Brown and his companion then followed Johnson to his residence at the Rambling Acres Trailer Park.
The confrontation escalated as Johnson, attempting to distance himself from the situation, locked himself in a back bedroom of his home. Brown, however, was persistent and forced his way into the room. According to reports from the Lenoir City Police Department and the 9th District Attorney General's office, Johnson, feeling threatened, discharged a Smith & Wesson. 40-caliber handgun, but the initial shot missed Brown. Undeterred, Brown allegedly continued to advance, now armed with a large knife. Johnson fired a second time, and this shot proved fatal, striking Brown in the upper left chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the shooting was conducted by the Lenoir City Police Department, the District Attorney General's office, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. After interviewing multiple witnesses and examining the evidence, authorities concluded that the shooting was an act of self-defense. They determined that Johnson was within his rights under Tennessee's 'Stand Your Ground' law to use deadly force. Consequently, no criminal charges were filed against him in connection with Michael Brown's death. The case was expected to be presented to the Loudon County Grand Jury for review later that year, pending final autopsy and toxicology reports.
