On a cold February morning in 2015, the life of 21-year-old Reginald Ballard was cut short in a motel room in East Ridge, Tennessee. His body was discovered on February 20th inside room 48 of the Cascades Motel after a staff member noticed the door was wide open. The ensuing investigation into his death would unravel a story of betrayal and violence, leading to the arrest of three individuals.
Investigators identified three suspects in connection with the murder: Kyhree Donte Thompson, Tabitha Nicole Garrison, and Verronta Page, who were all from the Dayton and Pikeville areas and were between the ages of 19 and 22 at the time. The trio was charged with the murder of Ballard. During a preliminary hearing in June 2015, conflicting accounts of the night's events began to emerge. Verronta Page claimed that Kyhree Thompson was the one who shot Ballard twice in the motel room. However, Tabitha Garrison testified that both Page and Thompson had shot Ballard. Garrison also alleged that she had been threatened to keep quiet.
The motive for the killing remained a subject of speculation, with investigators considering several possibilities. One theory was that the murder was an attempt to rob Ballard, who had allegedly sent a photo of himself with a large amount of cash to Garrison. Another possibility was that the killing was related to gang affiliations, or that a romantic involvement with Garrison may have played a role. Ballard's family, however, disputed any involvement their son might have had with gangs.
Garrison told prosecutors that she had met Ballard on Facebook and that he had picked her up from a party. She claimed that she contacted Page to come and get her from the motel because she felt uncomfortable with the situation. According to her testimony, when Ballard went to answer a knock at the door, Page and Thompson forced their way in, both brandishing firearms.
Ultimately, the case against the three suspects moved forward, and on October 28, 2015, a Hamilton County Grand Jury indicted Kyhree Thompson, Tabitha Garrison, and Verronta Page on charges of first-degree murder. Kyhree Thompson was later convicted of first-degree felony murder and attempted especially aggravated robbery, receiving an effective sentence of life in prison for his role in the death of Reginald Ballard.
